About the Area

La Maison D'Hibou (LMD) is situated in a small quiet village hamlet consisting of 5 houses, a church and the local Marie. This is real France and at its heart the Charente is a rural area dotted with an abundance of small traditional communities to explore. When you're travelling you will see lots of farms, many of which offer their produce for sale.

Nearby is the village of Montjean (5 km) which has a boulangerie and small restaurant and bar, to the north lies the larger market town of Sauze-Vaussais (12Km), to the south the village of Villefagnan (13Km), to the east the larger town of Ruffec (15Km) and to the west the town of Chef-Boutonne (15Km). All the towns mentioned are a short journey away and together they offer a wide variety of shops, street markets and restaurants for you to enjoy. They also cater for numerous leisure activities such as walking, cycling, tennis, horse riding, fishing and canoeing and there are several public lakeside beaches that have children's play areas and BBQs.

LMD is an excellent location for day trips; to the north is the city of Poitiers where you will find the world famous Futuroscope theme park and to the south the ancient Ramparts of the Roman town of Anglouleme. Further afield is the pretty city of Cognac, with its famous distilleries hugging the shore of the Charente river and Saintes which has one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres and last but not least the beautiful Atlantic city of La Rochelle famed for its beaches, port and fashionable shops.
